Orewa College students took their geography learning to Rotorua for three days of hands-on experience and adventure.
Year 13s explore tourism, culture and adventure on a three-day trip
Level 3 Geography ākonga swapped desks for hot pools and adventure on a three-day trip to Rotorua.
Organised and led by Louise Shepherd and Matt Harrison, with support from teachers Beryl Blucher and Lewis Bostock, and parent George Webb, the trip combined cultural learning with tourism studies. Students explored Rotorua’s “Eat Street” for insights into town planning, and observed Māori arts like weaving and carving.
A stand-out moment came on the river with Kaitiaki Adventures. After a karakia, students rafted past sacred sites and tackled a 7-metre waterfall showing resilience when one raft flipped and others swam through rapids.
The action continued with luge rides and zorbing, and evenings were spent sharing kai with hostel guests. A true Kiwi moment came with watching the Blues fall in the semis alongside international students.
The trip brought geography to life and gave students some memories they won’t forget.
