Navigating the Future: PILOT Day Inspires Year 13 Pasifika Students
Two of our senior ākonga had the opportunity to represent Orewa College at the Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow (PILOT) Day, hosted at Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
Held annually, PILOT Day gathers Pasifika Year 13 students from across Tāmaki Makaurau to inspire, connect, and empower the next generation of Pacific leaders.
What is PILOT Day?
PILOT (Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow) is a full-day event where students:
Hear from successful Pacific professionals and university students
Connect with peers from other secondary schools
Gain insights into study pathways and leadership opportunities
Celebrate Pacific identity and heritage
Highlights from the Day
Orewa College students heard from:
A former law student now working in the legal profession
A current Bachelor of Arts student sharing university life insights
Guest speaker Geoffrey Matautia, who captivated the audience with his journey into photography and media after leaving school
“Our ancestors were pilots of the ocean” this message echoed throughout the day, reminding students of their rich legacy and leadership potential.
Students were encouraged to explore their passions and pursue meaningful futures, guided by stories of real-world success and cultural pride.
Ngā mihi nui to AUT and all the organisers for hosting such a powerful and affirming event.
