Year 9 Sporting Pathways

Year 9 Sporting Pathways supports ākonga who want to develop their ability and confidence within rugby, football, netball or volleyball. The programme builds on the foundations established in Years 7 and 8, with a greater focus on sport specific skill development and athletic performance.

Students take part in targeted practical sessions that develop technical skills, tactical understanding and decision making within their chosen sport. Strength and conditioning is introduced as an important part of athlete development, helping students improve movement quality, fitness and physical capability.

The programme also supports personal growth through goal setting, teamwork, communication and resilience. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves, reflect on their progress and develop positive training habits within a supportive and competitive environment.

Sporting Pathways available at Year 9 include Rugby, Football, Netball and Volleyball.

Year 10 Sporting Pathways

Year 10 Sporting Pathways continues the development of ākonga who have participated in the programme during Year 9, with an increased focus on preparing students for senior sport and senior Physical Education.

Students further develop their technical, tactical and strategic understanding through specialised coaching, practical training and competitive sporting experiences. Strength and conditioning remains a key component, helping students improve athletic performance and prepare for the physical demands of senior competition.

Across rugby, football, netball and volleyball, students develop greater independence as athletes while strengthening their leadership, communication, resilience and decision making. The programme encourages students to set meaningful sporting goals and build the physical and mental readiness required for future opportunities.

By the end of Year 10, students are prepared to continue their Sporting Pathways journey through Level 1 Physical Education, Sporting Pathways, senior school teams and other competitive sporting opportunities.

Level 1 Physical Education, Sporting Pathways

Level 1 Physical Education, Sporting Pathways provides a senior pathway for students who have completed one of the Year 9 or Year 10 Sporting Pathways programmes in rugby, football, netball or volleyball. Students outside the Year 9 and 10 programme may also be considered following a meeting with the Teacher in Charge and Head of Department, Health and Physical Education.

The course provides ākonga with opportunities to continue developing as athletes within a positive, supportive and high performance learning environment. Students build their physical skills, game understanding and personal performance through practical and classroom based learning.

Learning includes movement skills, fitness, strength and conditioning, teamwork, leadership, communication and decision making. Students also explore how training methods, nutrition, recovery, goal setting and mindset contribute to sporting performance and overall wellbeing.

A strong emphasis is placed on personal growth, resilience and developing habits that support lifelong participation in physical activity and sport. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves, reflect on their progress and work collaboratively within competitive and athlete focused environments.

Assessment is based on four Orewa College Standards, incorporating both practical and theory components. Students apply their learning within authentic sporting contexts while developing the knowledge and skills needed to perform effectively in their chosen sport.

The course also supports progression into Years 12 and 13, premier school teams, elite level competition, opportunities for higher honours and strong, connected senior team environments.
