Silver Duke of Ed Group Takes on Mount Karangahake

Orewa College Silver Duke of Ed team completes practice tramp near Paeroa with determination, teamwork, and stunning views.

On 15 May, 27 students from the Silver Duke of Edinburgh group laced up their boots and headed to the Waitawheta Valley near Paeroa for their practice tramp.

The group tramped 11km to Dally’s Clearing Hut, where they set up camp at Dickey’s Flat. Day two brought a challenging 18km climb to the summit of Mount Karangahake: 544 metres up!

Guided by Mr Hawke and Mrs Wilding, the team demonstrated real manaaki and whakawhanaungatanga, making the experience not just about hiking but about growth.

They’re now preparing for their assessed tramp at Lake Waikaremoana later this year.
