Manaaki in Action: Bethany’s Everyday Kindness

Senior student Bethany exemplifies Manaaki in action at Orewa College through everyday kindness, leadership in Pasifika, and care for others.

At Orewa College, we believe that values are best shown through action and Bethany, a senior student and Pasifika leader, continues to be a living example of manaaki.

From welcoming new students to brightening the days of staff, Bethany shows care, kindness, and initiative in ways that uplift our kura and those around her.

“Although I have never taught Bethany, she brightens my day, everyday! Every time she sees me, she gives me a big wave and smile,” says Year 8 teacher Juanita Avery.

Bethany recently hand-made a bunch of flowers and wrote a heartfelt card, likely as part of Pink Shirt Day, demonstrating that kindness doesn’t need an audience to be meaningful.

She’s also looking ahead with purpose, attending university taste days and exploring her future with quiet determination. Her leadership in the Pasifika group and care for others embody the values of manaaki in action: respect for others, respect for self, and respect for the environment.

Ngā mihi nui, Bethany. Thank you for being a role model of everyday kindness.
