Snowy Adventures at Tongariro Build Confidence Needed for Nepal 2026

A determined group of senior students have just returned from a four-day alpine adventure in Tongariro National Park, where they faced icy trails, frosty mornings, and the crunch of snow beneath their boots.

The 50km tramp was part of their preparation for the Duke of Edinburgh’s prestigious Gold Award and the life-changing 2026 expedition to Nepal. With heavy packs and steady teamwork, the group navigated the cold conditions of the mountain. For some, it was their first time experiencing snow.

While staying at Waihohonu Hut, the group left a lasting impression. Fellow tramper Fiona Strachan shared:

“We had the pleasure of staying in Waihohonu Hut with some of your Gold Duke of Edinburgh students and their teachers. I’d like to compliment this group of remarkable young people. They were courteous, friendly, tidy and enthusiastic. Many made the effort to speak with us and both staff and students alike went out of their way to ensure that we weren’t inconvenienced. It’s great to see a college that enables and prioritises these life-changing experiences.”

Teachers Bruce Hawke, Frances Ferguson, James Baker and Nicole Holmes supported the group. This journey was a key step toward their 2026 Expedition to Nepal.
