Level 3 Outdoor Education students head out on the moana to learn about marine conservation, safety, and sustainability.
Outdoor Education students explore sustainable fishing and marine conservation in the Hauraki Gulf
Over the past four weeks, our Level 3 Outdoor Education students have been exploring the theme of Kaitiaki o te Moana (Guardians of the Ocean). Their studies have focused on sustainable fishing, marine safety, and environmental practices that protect the delicate ecosystems of the Hauraki Gulf.
To bring their learning to life, ākonga ventured out on a fishing charter where they experienced first-hand the importance of sustainable fishing. They practiced safe catch-and-release techniques, learned about different hooks and rigging setups, and discussed how small changes can make a big difference to the future of our fisheries.
The environmental organisation LegaSea joined the experience to share their mahi in marine conservation and inspire students to take action within their own communities. Auckland Council’s pest control team also spoke about protecting our islands from rats and other pests to ensure the health of native species and habitats.
And as a bonus, they took home a few freshly caught fish for dinner.
