Students Mark Pi Day With Memorisation Challenge

Orewa College students marked Pi Day with a memorisation competition, with Year 8 student Lien Hu reciting 316 digits to take first place.

Annual competition brings students together to recite digits of π across year levels

Orewa College marked Pi Day with its annual “Recite the Digits of π” competition, held during morning tea on Monday 16 March, bringing together students from Years 7, 8, 10, and 13.

Participants took on the challenge of memorising and reciting as many digits of π as possible. Year 8 student Lien Hu placed first, accurately reciting 316 digits. Suhani Sehrawat, also in Year 8, placed second, followed by Year 7 student Junwon Koo in third.

The competition highlights the relevance of π beyond the classroom, with connections to circles, engineering, physics, and real-world problem solving. It also provides an opportunity for students across year levels to connect through a shared academic challenge. Prizes were awarded to support participation and recognise effort across the group. The event continues to be a regular feature of the academic calendar.
