Olympic gold medallist Alicia Hoskin speaks to Orewa College Year 7 and 8 students about sport, resilience, and Olympic values.
Double Olympic champion visits kura to explore resilience and values through sport
Our Year 7 and 8 students gathered to hear from double Olympic gold medallist and flatwater canoeist Alicia Hoskin, who visited the kura at the invitation of Year 8 teacher Tristan Williams.
Alicia spoke about her journey in sport and how success at the highest level connects to everyday life. She shared insights into resilience and unpacked the Olympic values: Excellence, Respect, and Friendship, linking them to experiences both on and off the field.
Students had the opportunity to see and hold her two Olympic gold medals, adding a tangible dimension to the visit. Tristan Williams noted the impact of the moment, saying, “What a cool experience having real Olympic gold medals in our hands.”
Alicia also acknowledged the engagement of the group, commenting, “I loved their energy.”
The session provided a practical look at how discipline and mindset developed through sport can carry into school and wider life. It also gave ākonga a chance to connect with an athlete whose experiences reflect the values discussed.
